Successive American administrations tried diplomacy, sanctions and accommodation. None has fundamentally altered Tehran’s behavior. By confronting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and refusing to accept the regime’s long-held assumption that it can threaten American interests without consequence, President Trump has changed the strategic landscape. Mullah’s Latest Reprisal Against Maryam Akbari Monfared Is Further Evidence of the Iranian Regime’s Inhumane Nature

 By Mansoureh Galestan On Tuesday, the Iranian regime’s judiciary abruptly and forcibly transferred female political prisoner Maryam Akbari Monfared from Evin Prison to Semnan Prison, sparking protests from fellow detainees over continuing mistreatment for Ms. Monfared now in her 13th year of a 15-year sentence. Maryam Akbari Monfared  was arrested in 2009 and was held in solitary confinement for the first 43 days and denied all contact with her loved ones for a further four months after that. Her detention conditions seemed to worsen once again in 2016 after she penned an open letter following up on a formal complaint about unresolved human rights abuses from earlier in the history of the Iranian regime. The letter highlighted that two of Monfared’s siblings – one brother and one sister – had been executed by the Iranian regime in the summer of 1988 as part of a  massacre of political prisoners  that have claimed over 30,000 lives.  The death penalty and the execution of human beings under any pretext and for any reason is an inhuman punishment and a crime which the regime ruling Iran has legalized and justified over the years. With 255 executions in 2020, the Iranian regime continues to hold one of the world’s top records in the use of the death penalty. The clerical regime issued and carried out the death penalty for political crimes, drug-related crimes, sexual offenses, Moharebeh (waging war on God), armed robbery and drinking alcohol. At least 255 persons were executed in 2020. 54 executions were announced by official sources. At least 198 executions were carried out on the charge of murder. At least 26 persons were executed on drug-related charges. One person was hanged in public. At least 6 juvenile offenders were among those executed. At least 8 women were hanged.
