Written by Shamsi Saadati Paris, France  – On Saturday, May 17, 2025, an influential international conference convened in Paris, uniting parliamentarians and prominent political figures from a wide array of countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Malta, Switzerland, Romania, Portugal, and the Netherlands. The central theme of the gathering was the urgent need for a new, decisive international policy towards Iran, with a strong emphasis on supporting democratic change and recognizing the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) as a viable alternative to the current regime. The event served as a significant platform for global lawmakers to voice their concerns over the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran, the regime’s escalating domestic repression, its destabilizing regional activities, and its persistent pursuit of a nuclear program. Canada imposes new sanctions against the Iranian regime

Canada announced additional sanctions under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) provisions against the Iranian regime for gross human rights violations and for its involvement in the production of drones and ballistic missiles. This list includes eight individuals and two institutions, including senior officials of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and the police force.

These entities support the regime by disrupting and manipulating online communications and providing tactical equipment to suppress demonstrations. This is the 10th package of sanctions that Canada has imposed against the Iranian regime since October 2022.

The new measures announced today prohibit any dealings with individuals and entities on the list and freeze any assets they may have in Canada. Canada will continue to use diplomatic tools to respond to the Iranian regime’s human rights abuses, propaganda and actions that threaten international peace and stability. This includes working closely with partners and allies to ensure a coordinated approach to regime destabilizing actions.

“The simple truth is that Iranians want a better future. “They are fighting to protect their basic rights and freedoms so that their children – and future generations – can live in peace and prosperity,” Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said in response to Iran’s continued human rights violations.

Canada has implemented several measures to respond to these abuses, including imposing new sanctions against members of the Iranian regime, making the Iranian regime inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and investing in strengthening Canada’s capacity to implement Sanctions.

Since 2012, Canada has designated Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism and has sanctioned 147 Iranian individuals and 191 Iranian entities, including the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and key members of the regime’s security intelligence and economic apparatus. Victims of Iran-related terrorism are also allowed to file civil lawsuits against Iran for loss or damage anywhere in the world, thanks to the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act.
